South Africa’s police force is facing fresh scrutiny after suspended deputy police chief Shadrack Sibiya appeared in court on Tuesday over rape and sexual grooming allegations. The case comes as the country continues to grapple with widespread gender-based violence.
According to authorities, Sibiya is accused of sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl and raping an 18-year-old woman at a hotel in Johannesburg’s Sandton area between July and August 2026.
In total, he faces five charges, including rape, human trafficking and two counts linked to the sexual grooming of a child.
However, the court has postponed the case until September 29 as legal proceedings continue.
At the same time, the case has added to concerns over gender-based violence in South Africa. Nine women were reportedly killed east of Johannesburg between mid-July and mid-September.
Furthermore, police authorities said allegations of sexual offences must be investigated regardless of an officer’s rank or position. They stressed that no member of the police force should be above the law.
Previously, Sibiya was suspended after allegations that he interfered with investigations into political killings. He later appeared before a judicial commission examining corruption and criminal activity within the security sector.
Finally, the commission recommended further investigation into the allegations against him. The latest charges now place the senior officer at the centre of another major legal case.
