A serious road accident killed 22 people and injured 28 others on Wednesday in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. A bus overturned on a desert highway linking the resort towns of Dahab and Nuweiba, in the southern part of the peninsula.
Authorities have not yet specified the cause of the accident. Footage from the scene shows the overturned vehicle and debris scattered along the road.
Among those who died were Jordanian nationals, according to the public television Jordanian Al-Mamlaka. The bus transported in total 43 people with 22 Jordanians.
Egypt ministry of health had announced for the first time the death of 16 people, before the death toll rose. Twenty ambulances harried up on the scene and the injured ones have were transported in different hospital of the region.
The accident has happened in a touristic zone of south sinai, known for its beaches, coral reefs and mountainous landscapes.
Close to 6000 deaths on the road last year
jThe circulation accidents are frequents in Egypt. They are normally attributed to dangerous driving, to bad care of the vehicle and to uneven enforcement of traffic laws.
Last month, at least 18 people, with teenagers, had perish in the north of the country in collision between two pickup trucks carrying farm workers.
According to the national Egyptian agency of statistics, close to 6000 people died on the road accidents of the last year.
