Togolese diplomacy is continuing its drive on the international stage. On an official visit to China for the past few days, Prime Minister Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé was received in audience by President Xi Jinping in Beijing, a summit meeting that underscores the depth of relations between Lomé and the world’s leading economic power.
This visit, organised at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang, forms part of a process of gradually strengthening ties between the two countries. The Prime Minister’s itinerary includes a series of meetings with high-level Chinese officials, lending this diplomatic mission a significance that goes beyond that of a mere courtesy visit.
At the heart of the discussions are the prospects for economic and trade cooperation between Togo and China. This is fertile ground, given that in recent years the two countries have developed increasingly structured ties across a range of sectors, from infrastructure to trade, including industrial investment and technological exchange.
For Togo, being received at the highest level of the Chinese state sends a strong signal to the international community: Lomé is playing in the big league, cultivating its partnerships with the major powers and intends to make this relationship with Beijing an additional lever for national development and the country’s influence across the continent.
