A fashion show in Bujumbura, Burundi, is highlighting the importance of environmental protection through clothing made from recycled waste. The event, called “THE KAMENGE DROP”, took place as part of Green Diplomacy Week 2026.
First, the show featured outfits created by around ten young designers following a programme focused on transforming waste into artistic products. The collections included materials such as discarded mosquito nets, plastic bags and mobile phone accessories.
According to Burundian artist Manuela Minka, the initiative encourages people to see waste differently. She explained that everyday discarded objects can be transformed into useful and creative products while promoting greater respect for the environment.
Furthermore, the programme provided training opportunities for young designers, including Arsène Irakoze. He highlighted the economic potential of recycling, noting that waste materials can be used to create products that generate income.
The event also attracted considerable interest from local residents. Gracia Kezakimana, a resident of Bujumbura, praised the outfits and accessories presented during the show. She also expressed interest in learning the techniques used by the designers.
Beyond fashion, the initiative aims to raise awareness about waste management and encourage more environmentally responsible behaviour. It also demonstrates how creative activities can help communicate important environmental messages to younger generations.
However, recycling remains relatively underdeveloped in Burundi, despite several local initiatives. By combining fashion, creativity and environmental awareness, “THE KAMENGE DROP” highlights the potential of sustainable fashion to reduce waste, support young talent and create new economic opportunities.
