Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema Sworn In for Second Term
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has been sworn in for a second term at the helm of the country. The ceremony took place at a stadium in Lusaka in front of thousands of supporters of his United Party for National Development (UPND), dressed in red to celebrate his re-election.
In his inauguration speech, Hichilema placed his second term under the banner of economic growth, with his programme dubbed “Grow Zambia.” The president pledged to continue implementing reforms and create more opportunities for Zambians, particularly young people.
Inside the stadium, supporters celebrated their candidate’s victory. Many hope that the new term will improve living conditions and address the expectations of a young population facing high unemployment.
A Contested Re-election
Despite his official victory, the election remains marred by accusations from the opposition. Opposition parties have denounced intimidation, favourable treatment for the incumbent government and restrictions that limited their activities during the campaign.
As Africa’s second-largest copper producer, Zambia is seeking to attract more investment and strengthen its economy. For Hichilema, this second term will be an opportunity to turn electoral promises into tangible results.
